Frequently asked questions

What does a dietitian do?
EH_Arrow_Button_N_RGB EH_Arrow_Button_N_RGB

A dietitian applies the science of food and nutrition to support your health and wellbeing. At Ethos Health, our dietitians can help by:

  • Assessing your overall diet quality, including your intake of energy, protein, fibre, fluids, vitamins and minerals and comparing this with your individual nutritional needs.
  • Identifying practical changes to help you achieve your health and nutrition goals, while working alongside you to create realistic and achievable adjustments.
  • Providing support with the management of specific health conditions including disordered eating, osteoporosis, diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure.
  • Offering supportive counselling and helping you maintain motivation throughout your nutrition journey.

In Australia, there is a difference between a dietitian and other nutritional health providers, including nutritionists. The main difference is the qualifications required.

To become a dietitian, an accredited dietetics degree must be completed. This provides a strong scientific foundation and supports an evidence-based approach to nutrition and health.

It is important to note that some dietitians may also refer to themselves as nutritionists; however, nutritionists without a dietetics qualification cannot use the title of dietitian.

A dietitian is defined as:

A professional who applies the science of food and nutrition to promote health, prevent and treat disease and optimise the health of individuals, groups, communities and populations.

No. You can make an appointment with a dietitian with or without a referral.

Ethos Health Dietitians can provide support for a wide range of health and nutrition concerns, including but not limited to:

  • Diabetes
  • Cardiovascular disease, including high cholesterol and high blood pressure
  • Gastrointestinal and gut health concerns, including coeliac disease, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
  • Bone health concerns, including osteopenia and osteoporosis
  • Pregnancy nutrition
  • Child and adolescent nutrition
  • Weight management
  • Tube feeding (or enteral feeding)
  • Kidney disease
  • Fatty liver
  • Sports nutrition
  • Nutritional deficiencies
  • Improving body image
  • Disordered eating and eating disorders

Your first consultation is focused on gathering information to better understand your individual needs. This includes a comprehensive dietary assessment (usually completed through a computer-based review), an understanding of relevant clinical and lifestyle factors and discussion around your expectations and goals.

Your dietitian will review your eating patterns and discuss what you would like to achieve from your appointments. At the end of your first session, you will leave with a personalised action plan outlining the first steps towards improving your nutrition.

If relevant, it can be helpful to bring any recent test results or specialist reports related to the reason for your appointment, as well as a list of your current medications and/or supplements.

You may also choose to keep a food diary for a few days or up to a week before your appointment; however, this is not essential. A food and symptom diary can be particularly helpful if you are seeking support with food allergies or intolerances.

Before your appointment, we will also provide a pre-consultation questionnaire to help identify areas of interest and plan your sessions.

Yes. Ethos Health Dietitians offer both telephone and video consultation options.

The number of sessions required depends on the reason for your appointment, as well as the level of counselling and support you may need. Your dietitian will work with you to determine the most appropriate approach for your individual goals and circumstances.

If you have been provided with a Medicare referral from your GP under an Eating Disorders Management Plan or Chronic Disease Management Plan, you may be eligible for a Medicare rebate.

Yes. Private health insurance rebates may be available depending on your level of cover. We recommend checking your eligibility directly with your health fund.
